The High Country Rail Trail, a hidden gem nestled in Victoria's High Country, offers a unique and immersive way to explore the region's rich history and breathtaking landscapes. One of the most picturesque stretches of this rail trail runs from Shelley Station to Bullioh, promising a memorable journey for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Join us as we embark on a two-wheeled adventure through this remarkable trail, discovering its beauty and uncovering its historical significance.
Shelley Station: A Glimpse into the Past
Our journey begins at Shelley Station, a place that instantly transports you back in time. Once the highest train station in Australia serving a key point on the journey from Cudgewa to Wodonga, the station now stands as a historical relic, nestled amongst the trees and serving as the trailhead for our adventure. Stepping onto our bikes with 6 adults and 5 kids we set off along the gravel path that used to be the railway line.
Darbyshire Hill
Nestled on Darbyshire Hill, a fascinating historical marker awaits halfway down the slope. It recounts the challenging journey of heavily loaded trains making their ascent up Darbyshire Hill during frosty mornings. In a remarkable feat of determination and grit, these locomotives often had to make not one, but three or even four attempts to conquer the hill.
With engines roaring at full throttle, they'd power their way up the icy tracks until the wheels began to slip. At that point, they'd reverse course, descending to the bottom and reattempting the climb. Gradually, with each successive try, they'd inch their way closer to the summit until, at last, they triumphantly crested the hill. Their onward journey would continue, carrying their precious cargo to Shelley Station. This historic tale encapsulates the unwavering resilience of the railway workers who conquered the challenging terrain of Darbyshire Hill.
Scenic Views at Every Turn
The High Country Rail Trail has sweeping vistas, and this section doesn't disappoint. As we pedal along, the trail winds through dense forests on the South side of the hill giving way to fern covered gullies and giant eucalyptus trees filled with raucous native birds calls.
Historical Sites Along the Way
The Rail Trail is a treasure trove of history. As you ride, you'll come across many remnants of the past including enormous old timber railway trestle bridges and retired station platforms. These relics are a testament to the railway's role in opening up this rugged terrain to transport people and rabbit skins back and forth between Cudgewa and Wodonga via Tallangatta.
Bullioh: A Charming Destination
Arriving at Bullioh after the long downhill decent, skirting trestle bridges and open farm land the trail follows the Boggy Creek to the last bridge recently rebuilt by a group of local volunteers. Rest for a while and then contemplate riding back up or plan ahead and have a car at the bottom the hill on the Granya Road.
Practical Tips for Your Adventure:
Trail Conditions: The first section of the trail is suitable for mountain and hybrid or cyclocross bikes, its bit rough and gravelly but easy to navigate. There’s one moderate hill between Shelley and the Boggy Creek Trestle bridge at Koetong and the rest is down hill sailing with minimal effort. We stashed an esky of food at Koetong where we stopped for a picnic lunch.
Trail Length: The stretch from Shelley Station to Bullioh is approximately 29 kilometers one way. It's a comfortable day trip, but plan accordingly, as there are no facilities along the trail so take water and food and of course toilet paper.
Weather: Be mindful of changing weather conditions. Dress in layers and carry essentials such as a first aid kit, and sunscreen.
Safety: Always wear a helmet and respect trail etiquette. Share the path with fellow riders and be cautious at road crossings.
